Heavy rain Saturday caused a sewer spill at the City of Morganton Sewer Treatment Plant.

The spill started at 10:55 am Saturday July 27 at a sewer junction box on Vine Arden Road near the Sewer Treatment Plant, according to according to Ronnie Suttles Water Resources Collection and Distribution Supervisor. The spill ended at 1:40 pm the same day, Saturday July 27.

Approximately 5,500 gallons of sewer overflowed into Hunting Creek and the Catawba River, but Suttles said the overflow was mostly rainwater that infiltrated into the sewer system during the Saturday storm.

Residents do not need to boil their water.
