Collett Street outdoor pool house getting some needed upgrades

Tennis courts also receiving facelift
The City of Morganton Collett Street outdoor pool should be open by the middle of June with a newly renovated pool house for visitors.
Parks and Recreation Director Gary Leonhardt said the renovation project will upgrade the pool house with new tile flooring, new fixtures and partitions, new showers, new plumbing, new LED lighting and new benches. The dressing rooms and the check room are also being upgraded.

MOJO & The Bayou Gypsies take the stage Friday night at TGIF to kick off the Morganton Jazz Festival, which continues Saturday. Farmers Market vendors will be selling fresh produce and goods Saturday morning. And Trout Fishing In America and Sweet Potato Pie take the stage Saturday night at CoMMA!

Stop by City Hall during Drinking Water Week

In celebration of Drinking Water Week, the City of Morganton invites water and sewer customers to stop by City Hall, enjoy some refreshments and enter a drawing for several prizes provided the Water Resources Department including water bottles and tickets to the City' Red, White and Bluegrass Festival! The City will draw prizes every day and the grand prize festival ticket winners will be drawn Friday.
Acrylic paintings and multimedia collages on display in City Hall

The City of Morganton invites you to visit the latest Art in the Hall showing located in Morganton City Hall. Currently on display through June 2013 are acrylic paintings and multimedia collages by Priscilla Wallace. The works are typified by strong color and nonrepresentational design working in abstraction, "with the belief that we find personal meaning in the unspecified," according to Wallace.

Sixteen positions on various City advisory boards and commissions will expire at the end of June 2013, and the City Council wants to encourage residents to get involved. Member terms will expire on the following boards and commissions: the Board of Adjustment the Cable Television Commission, the Human Relations Commission, the Main Street Advisory Commission, the Planning & Zoning Commission, the Recreation Advisory Commission, and the Redevelopment Commission.

May 11 - 3 to 8pm | Hot Jazz and New Orleans Cuisine!
Spend Saturday May 11 on the Courthouse Square enjoying downtown's newest event The Morganton Jazz Festival featuring New Orleans food and hot jazz music. The Festival begins at 3pm with the first of five jazz bands, while members of the Patton Band Boosters and local restaurateur extraordinaire, Phil Scarboro, serve up a feast of New Orleans cuisine.
Come hungry and prepared to enjoy mouthwatering gumbo (a stew served over rice), Étouffée with shrimp (similar to gumbo but thicker), red beans and rice and of course a New Orleans must...Beignets (powder sugared treat, similar to doughnuts)! Hotdogs, Hamburgers, soft drinks, wine and beer will also be available.

Heavy rain causes sewer spills

Update - May 8, 2013: The sewer spill at the Morganton Wastewater Treatment Plant stopped Tuesday morning. The spill started at 4:00 pm Sunday and ended at 8:00 am Tuesday. Approximately 2.1 million gallons of sewer overflowed into Hunting Creek and the Catawba River. The spill was mostly stormwater overflow caused by heavy rains this past weekend.

More than seven inches of rain in the past two days caused multiple sewer spills in the City of Morganton Sunday evening. More than 19,000 gallons of sewer, mostly rainwater, have spilled into Hunting Creek and the Catawba River, and a spill at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant is ongoing.
The spills started Sunday at three locations: Fleming and Cox Street, Pearson Drive and the Wastewater Treatment Plant, according to Ronnie Suttles, Water Resources Collection and Distribution Supervisor.
