City hires new Assistant Manager

Scott HildebranThe City of Morganton has hired Scott Hildebran as the new Assistant City Manager. Hildebran currently serves as the Town Manager of Blowing Rock and he will bring more than 23 years of local government management experience to the City's administrative department.

"I'm very excited to be coming to Morganton," Hildebran said. "The City of Morganton has a great reputation around the state and the position provides an opportunity for me to grow professionally."

City electric crews work fast to restore power to customers

May 24, 2013

Storms Wednesday night and Thursday morning caused multiple power outages in Morganton, but City Electric crews were able to quickly repair the damage and restore power to customers.

Around 5:15 pm, tree limbs fell on power lines on Golf Course Road, North Terrace Place and Pearson Drive cutting power to about 70 customers for two hours. Two hours later, a limb fell on a power line on Burkemont Avenue and shut down one of the City's main electrical circuits. About 600 customers were affected. Around the same time, a lightning strike on Normandy Drive knocked out power to about 40 customers, and a limb fell on power lines on Craftsman Drive shutting off power to 65 customers.

City Hall closed Monday for Memorial Day

Morganton City Hall will be closed Monday May 27, 2013, in observance of Memorial Day.

Garbage collection schedules will be affected. No garbage pickup on Monday May 27. Collection for the remainder of the week will be on a one-day delay. Monday's route will be collected Tuesday; Tuesday's route will be collected Wednesday; Wednesday's route will be collected Thursday; Thursday's route will be collected Friday.

Downpour causes sewer spills

May 23, 2013

Roughly four inches of rain in four hours caused two sewer spills in the City of Morganton Wednesday evening. Roughly 782,400 gallons of sewer, mostly rainwater, have spilled into Hunting Creek and the Catawba River.

Students visit City Hall

Morganton Day School studentsMorganton Day School second graders visited City Hall Tuesday May 21. Mayor Mel Cohen talked to the students about local government the services the City provides for residents and businesses. The students participated in a mock Council meeting and they also took a tour of City Hall. Water customers win festival ticktets

Congratulations to Ginger Hambright and David Hathcock who won free tickets to the City of Morganton's Red, White and Bluegrass Festival this summer. Ginger and David are City of Morganton water customers. They stopped by the Water Resources Departments' Drinking Water Week table earlier this month and entered the drawing for free water bottles and the free tickets to the festival.

Collett Street outdoor pool house getting some needed upgrades

Tennis courts also receiving facelift

The City of Morganton Collett Street outdoor pool should be open by the middle of June with a newly renovated pool house for visitors.

Parks and Recreation Director Gary Leonhardt said the renovation project will upgrade the pool house with new tile flooring, new fixtures and partitions, new showers, new plumbing, new LED lighting and new benches. The dressing rooms and the check room are also being upgraded.
