Public invited to learn about proposed zoning changes

TThe City of Morganton is writing new zoning regulations that will guide development in Morganton during the next 10 to 20 years. City staff is holding an informational workshop to explain the proposed regulations and to get input and feedback from the public. The informational workshop will be held from noon to 7:00 pm Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, in the City Council Chambers of City Hall.

Burke tourism ranks 1st in job growth, 2nd in spending increase

burke-county-travel-and-tourismBurke County's tourism industry is a pacesetter in North Carolina, ranking first in percentage of tourism job growth and second in the increase of visitor spending.

According to figures released Friday by the NC Division of Tourism, Burke County had the largest increase in direct tourism employment from 2012 to 2013. The county experienced a 5.8% surge in tourism jobs, easily topping Buncombe County, which saw a 5.0% increase.

Public workshop on proposed zoning changes

The City of Morganton is working to draft new zoning regulations that will impact development in Morganton during the next 20 years. Zoning regulations outline what property owners can and cannot do on their property. City staff is holding a public workshop between noon and 7:00 pm Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, to help inform property owners about the proposed changes and their impact. The public can stop by City Hall anytime during the workshop and ask any questions about the proposed changes and about any specific properties.

Muster at Morganton on Aug. 16 and learn about Revolutionary History!

nps-logoMorganton, NC: The National Park Service is pleased to announce a guided walk along a certified section of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (OVNHT) on Saturday, August 16that 10:00 am. Park Ranger Valerie Baldwin will lead the guided walk and tell the story of the Overmountain Men and their connection to Morganton. This program will begin at the River Village access of the Morganton Greenway. The access is located at the intersection of Sanford Drive and North Green Street on the Catawba River Greenway behind the River Village shopping center. The two-mile, round trip, guided walk is free and will take approximately two hours.
