The City of Morganton has closed South Meadow Drive to through traffic due to a developing sink hole under the road.
City Engineer Mark Young said that a stream has washed away soil around a culvert under the road. As more and more soil has been washed away, the road has started to dip, which is a hazard for drivers.
"We had to close the road to through traffic for safety reasons," Young said. "We'll make the repairs as quickly as possible."
Young said it will likely take a few days to make the repairs. Until then, residents who live on South Meadow Drive can access their homes via London Street or Dellwood Drive. The road will not be open to through traffic.
