Field Operations Bureau
The Field Operations Bureau manages police and fire operations that include the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, and Special Operations Division. Specialty units within Public Safety include the School Resource Officer Program, D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education), Community Policing, the K-9 program and Police and Fire Reserves. Morganton Public Safety Officers also participate in the Burke County Narcotics Task Force.Support Services Bureau
The Support Services Bureau includes all office personnel, training and recruiting, Parking Enforcement, Animal Control, Evidence Control, fleet and facility management, and managing the information systems and telecommunications.

The Public Safety Headquarters is located at 304 S. College St.
Morganton employed law enforcement personnel as early as 1896 and purchased firefighting equipment as early as 1923.
In 1976, the Morganton Department of Public Safety was formed from a separate police and fire department. Since that time the City of Morganton has continued the Public Safety philosophy.
