Morganton is the County Seat of Burke County, which is located in the foothills of western North Carolina. The City is intersected by I-40, US Highways 64 and 70, and NC Highways 18 and 181. Interstates 26, 77 and 85 are within a 50 mile radius. The Charlotte International Airport is just over an hour's drive from downtown -
The Heart of Morganton is its vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, galleries, shops, parks a movie theater, and more. Residents gather on the Historic Courthouse Square during spring and summer to enjoy free Friday night concerts, and CoMMA, the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium, offers wonderful shows and theater productions.

Morganton City Councilman Dr. Alfred Hamer Jr. recently received the 2012 Distinguished Medical Alumni Award from the UNC School of Medicine. The purpose of the award is to honor alumni who have significantly enhanced the reputation and prestige of the School of Medicine through their lifelong careers of service and accomplishment. Criteria for selection include excellence in professional and community leadership and service or exemplary contributions to the medical profession or to humankind of such importance as to merit national and international recognition.
