Morganton is the County Seat of Burke County, which is located in the foothills of western North Carolina. The City is intersected by I-40, US Highways 64 and 70, and NC Highways 18 and 181. Interstates 26, 77 and 85 are within a 50 mile radius. The Charlotte International Airport is just over an hour's drive from downtown -
The Heart of Morganton is its vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, galleries, shops, parks a movie theater, and more. Residents gather on the Historic Courthouse Square during spring and summer to enjoy free Friday night concerts, and CoMMA, the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium, offers wonderful shows and theater productions.

Preparation underway for NCDOT construction at Exit 104 on Enola RoadUtility line preparation for construction at Exit 104 on Enola Road has started, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation is expected to start construction in the spring. City staff have prepared a simplified plan so residents can compare the current Exit 104 interchange with the future interchange.

The Morganton Human Relations Commission is currently accepting nominations and will announce the City's 2012 Citizens of the Year that will be held later this year.
